DETECTION OF HISTORICAL PIPELINE LEAK PLUMES

DETECTION OF HISTORICAL PIPELINE LEAK PLUMES

A proof-of-concept electromagnetic geophysical survey was conducted at a UPR in order to image a historical leak from a waste transfer pipeline. The proof-of-concept survey was to assess the viability of an innovative application of an electromagnetic technique for detecting elevated soil conductivity caused by these past releases in the presence of an even more electrically conductive metallic pipe. Extensive surface-based geophysical characterization has already demonstrated that geophysical technologies have the capability to provide an efficient and cost effective tool for leak detection.
